Etheridge was born in 1902. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Class of 1926. He concentrates on his wartime service in command of the seaplane tending destroyer William B. Preston (AVD-7). His ship was awarded a unit commendation after successful operations under enemy attack in the Philippines, Dutch East Indies, and Australia. He later put the seaplane tender Cumberland Sound (AV-17) into commission towards the end of World War II. Grant also discusses his command of Fleet Air Wing One, flying patrol and reconnaissance missions in the Pacific during the Korean War. He retired as a U.S. Navy Rear Admiral. Etheridge died in 1988.
Legion of Merit Citation Sypnosis:
Captain Etheridge Grant, United States Navy, was awarded a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commander Fleet Air Wing ONE during operations against enemy forces in Korea from 17 June 1950 to 28 February 1951.
