Billy Orin Gates was born on January 10, 1917, in Berthoud, Larimer County, Colorado. He was the son of Bacil Roy Gates and Aletta M. Lutener Gates.
Billy served in the 214 (R.A.F.) Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flight Sergeant during World War II. A crew member on the Wellington Ic Z1148, which took off from RAF Stradishall on April 15, 1942, Flight Sergeant Gates was declared Killed in Action when the aircraft failed to return from an operational flight over Germany. The cause of the crash and crash site were not established.
