Walter J. Furtak was born on September 29, 1920 in Butternut, Ashland County, Wisconsin. He served in the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division as a Private First Class during World War II. He died on September 23, 1944 at the age of 23 in Veghel, Netherlands and is now buried in the Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Netherlands. PFC Furtak was one of the brave American paratroopers of the 501st Inf who liberated the village of Eerde, The Netherlands from German forces in September 1944.
