Gus W. Berbes was born on November 13, 1923. He graduated from Patterson Park High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II where he was a paratrooper and was a member of the Office of Strategic Services. This later became the Central Intelligence Agency.

Berbes was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church in Charlottesville, and the OSS, Harrisonburg Lions Club, B.P.O.E. No. 450, American Legion Post No. 27 and V.F.W. Post No. 8644. He died on February 8, 2006 at the age of 82 and is now buried in the Eastlawn Memorial Gardens, Rockingham County, Virginia, USA.
