George Melroy Schwarzkopf was born on April 16, 1921, in Queens County, New York. He was the son of George G. Schwarzkopf and Maria Henrietta “Mary” Weisel Schwarzkopf. George served in the 561st Bomber Squadron, 388th Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Staff Sergeant and the Waist Gunner of the B-17F 42-30207 'Big Red' during World War II.

On March 27, 1944, his plane took off from station #136 around 10:19 am at Knettishall, England, for a mission in Bordeaux-Merignac airfield. His plane was shot down by flak and exploded in Azienay. SSgt Schwarzkopf was Killed in Action and is now buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Kew Gardens, Queens County, New York, USA.
