Joshua Manuel Lewis was born on July 1, 1913 in Maryland. He resided in Baltimore County, Maryland prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on September 5, 1942 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a welder and also as Married. Joshua served as a Staff Sergeant and Tail Gunner on B-17F "Sondra Kay" #42-5906, 562nd Bomber Squadron, 388th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
Joshua was "Killed In Action" when his B-17, after receiving battle damage on a bombing raid over La Pallice, France, crash landed at Upper Cilgee Farm, Llanure, two miles from Llandrindod Wells, Wales, England during the war. He is now buried in the Hillcrest Memorial Park, Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland, USA. SSgt Lewis was one of the many brave Americans of the 388th Bomber Group who lost their lives in aerial operations against the German forces from June 1943 - August 1945.
