Robert B. Leventhal was born in 1921 in Missouri. He was the son of Frank W. Leventhal and Anne Leventhal. He resided in St. Louis City, Missouri prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on February 25, 1942 in St. Louis, Missouri. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a mechanic and also as Single, without dependents. Robert served as a Second Lieutenant and Navigator on B-17F "Sondra Kay" #42-5906, 562nd Bomber Squadron, 388th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
Robert was "Killed In Action" when his B-17, after receiving battle damage on a bombing raid over La Pallice, France, crash landed at Upper Cilgee Farm, Llanure, two miles from Llandrindod Wells, Wales, England during the war. He is now buried in the Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom. He also has a cenotaph located in Beth Hamedrosh Hagodol Cemetery, Ladue, St. Louis County, Missouri. 2Lt Leventhal was one of the many brave Americans of the 388th Bomber Group who lost their lives in aerial operations against the German forces from June 1943 - August 1945.
