John Henry Fischer was born on November 3, 1922 in Buffalo, Erie County, New York. He was a Ball Turret Gunner and crew member of B-17G #42-31153, 'Captain Joe', which was shot down by flak and crash landed in Gauchin-Verloingt, two miles NW of St Pol, near Hernicourt, France on a mission to Frankfurt, Germany on 20 Mar 1944. John and waist gunner A.E. Thompson were killed. 8 other members of this crew were taken as Prisoners of War. Sgt Fischer is now buried in the Saint Francis Xavier Cemetery, Buffalo, Erie County, New York, USA. He was one of the many brave Americans of the 388th Bomber Group who lost their lives in aerial operations against the German forces from June 1943 - August 1945.
