Walter James Conine, Jr. was born in October 1921. He served in the 562nd Bomber Squadron, 388th Bomber Group, Heavy as a Second Lieutenant and Navigator of 42-30829 "The Princess Pat" aircraft, and was with the Moran crew during World War II. The crew was flying a Berlin mission as in the lead squadron when the Group was swarmed by FW-109s near Celle, Germany, enroute to the target. Its left wing shot off, the plane flipped on its back briefly before going down. It is believed to have crashed in the vicinity of Noepke, Germany. Two crewmembers were killed (including Conine); the remaining eight survived to become POWs. He is now buried in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, USA. Lt Conine was one of the many brave Americans of the 388th Bomber Group who lost their lives in aerial operations against the German forces from June 1943 - August 1945.
