Herman J. Ball was born on February 27, 1906 in Wisconsin. He resided in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on June 2, 1942 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Salesmen and also as Single, without dependents. Herman served as a Technical Sergeant and Top Turret Gunner on B-17F "Sondra Kay" #42-5906, 562nd Bomber Squadron, 388th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
Herman was "Killed In Action" when his B-17, after receiving battle damage on a bombing raid over La Pallice, France, crash landed at Upper Cilgee Farm, Llanure, two miles from Llandrindod Wells, Wales, England. He is now buried in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, USA. Sgt Ball was one of the many brave Americans of the 388th Bomber Group who lost their lives in aerial operations against the German forces from June 1943 - August 1945.
