William Kenneth Aunspaugh was born on March 13, 1919. He was the son of George H. Aunspaugh and Lily C. Aunspaugh. He was the bombardier on B-17 Flying Fortress named "My Day" which Ditched into the English Channel off the coast of Isle of Wight England after being damaged on a bombing mission in Germany. 6 of the 10 crew members were not rescued from the icy waters. William is still missing. His name is commemorated on the Tablets of the Missing, Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom. He also has a cenotaph located in Gothenburg Cemetery, Gothenburg, Dawson County, Nebraska. 2Lt Aunspaugh was one of the many brave Americans of the 388th Bomber Group who lost their lives in aerial operations against the German forces from June 1943 - August 1945.
