Thomas J. Smith, Jr. was born on September 11, 1922. He served in the 22nd Bombardment Squadron, 341st Bombardment Group, Medium as a First Lieutenant and Pilot of an aircraft during World War II. On a low level combat mission to Vinh, French Indo China (now Vietnam), the B-25 Mitchell bomber in which 1st Lt. Thomas J. Smith was a crew member, was shot down by enemy ground fire and crashed into a river. All aboard were lost including: 2nd Lt. Robert E. Caldwell; T/Sgt. Charles C. Evans; S/Sgt. Walter Altman; and S/Sgt. Napoleon E. Plante. 1Lt Smith is now buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii, USA.

He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
