Frank A. Roberts entered the military service in Georgia. He served in the 882nd Bomber Squadron, 500th Bomber Group, Very Heavy as a Major and Pilot of an aircraft during World War II. Major Roberts was the Aircraft Commander of U.S. Army Air Corps B-29-50-BW Superfortress #42-24785, nicknamed "Homing De-Vice." He perished when the bomber was shot down by enemy Ki-61 fighter while on mission to Nagoya, Japan, and crashed into the Pacific Ocean with the loss of all eleven crew. His name is commemorated on the Honolulu Memorial, Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii, USA.
Maj Roberts was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
