Roy Wolford Gholson was born on February 12, 1918 in McCracken County, Kentucky. He was the son of Frank W. Gholson and Mary Stewart Gholson. Lieutenant Gholson enlisted on November 2, 1942, and was sent to Kelly Field, San Antonio, Texas for his pre-flight training. His primary work was taken at Stamford, Tex. and his basic training at Enid, Oklahoma. His advanced pilot training was received at Aloe Field, Tex.
After receiving his commission as a Second Lieutenant, he was stationed at Comlumbia, S. C. until he left for overseas duty. 2Lt Roy was Killed in Action March 22, 1944 over IndoChina and is now buried in the Mount Kenton Cemetery, Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky, USA. He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
