Douglas Bannon, aged 19, was born on December 11, 1925. Sergeant Bannon had attended Franklin High School, had carried papers for The Oregonian, volunteered for service in February 1944, received his air training at Lowry Field, Colo. and Great Bend, Kan. He went overseas in February, 1945, as a top turret gunner in a B-29. He was on his ninth combat mission over Japan when his plane was lost on May 26, 1945 during World War II. He is now buried in the Lincoln Memorial Park, Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon, USA. Douglas was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China but his death date is inscribed as 1945-4-26.
