Lenard L. Anderson entered the military service in Iowa. He served in the 769th Bomber Squadron, 462nd Bomber Group, Very Heavy as a Technical Sergeant and Right Waist Gunner on B-29-5-BW Superfortress aircraft. He was declared "Missing in Action" on July 8, 1944 and is commemorated on the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines. He perished when the U.S. Army Air Corps B-29-5-BW Superfortress #42-6263 ditched off Kurmitola, India. Three crew were killed (including Anderson) but eight survived and were rescued. He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is also commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
