Joel S. Abelson was born on February 29, 1920. He served in the 375th Bomber Squadron, 308th Bomber Group, Heavy as a Staff Sergeant during World War II. He died on January 15, 1944 at the age of 23 and is now buried in the New Montefiore Cemetery, West Babylon, Suffolk County, New York, USA. He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
