Herbert Elwood Pertain, aged 28, was born on November 13, 1915 in Brooklyn, Kings County (Brooklyn), New York. He was the son of George Herbert Pertain and Irene E. Curley Pertain. Herbert was a graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School. He enlisted on Oct. 10, 1940 in Newark, NJ as a Private in the Regular Army. He attended Officer Candidate School and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant at Ft. Benning, GA on Oct. 2, 1942. Soon after, he was promoted to First Lieutenant. After the birth of his daughter, Lt. Pertain reported to Ft. Meade, Md. for overseas replacement. He went to Europe with his infantry unit in July 1944. Herbert served in Company C, 134th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division as a First Lieutenant during World War II. He died from his wounds received in battle on September 21, 1944 in Agincourt, France and is now buried in Saint John Cemetery, Middle Village, Queens County, New York, USA.
