Walter Clyde McConnell, Jr. was born on July 29, 1922 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He was the son of Walter Clyde and Elnora Caldwell McConnell. Walter Clyde, Jr. served in the 49th Fighter Squadron, 14th Fighter Group as First Lieutenant during World War II. He was Killed in Action on August 14, 1944 during the liberation of Arles, France. He was declared Missing in Action and is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing, Rhone American Cemetery and Memorial, France. He also has a cenotaph located in Mount Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery, Cornelius, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
