Espy & Kitchens Memorial (404th Fighter Group, 508th Fighter Squadron)
Bertram C. “Bert” Espy, Jr. was born on April 10, 1923, in Longview, Texas. He was the son of Bertram C Espy and Stella May Holloway Espy.
Bertram served in the 508th Fighter Squadron, 404th Fighter Group, as a Fighter Pilot on the P-47D #42-25747 during World War II. On June 24, 1944, 1Lt Espy took off from airfield Station 414 in Winkton, England, for ground troop support mission in the Avranches sector in France. At about 1:45 PM, his plane collided with Lt Kitchens' P-47 #42-25872 at medium altitude. Both men died as a result of the mid-air collision.
1Lt Espy is now buried in the Memory Park Cemetery, Longview, Harrison County, Texas, USA.
