2nd Lieutenant James Riley took off from Foggia, Italy air base flying his P-38 Lightning 43-2543 on an escort bombing mission over Salon-de-Provence. He was shot down by a German fighter over the Golf de La Ciotat towards 1230. His plane was found but never fully searched.
