He entered the military service in Wisconsin and served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Private in the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died on January 30, 1945 and is now buried in Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery, Hombourg, Belgium. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in Bullingen, Belgium but his name's middle initial is inscribed as H.
