Edward Carter Sortwell was born on March 25, 1889 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. He was the son of Alvin Foye Sortwell and Gertrude Winship Dailey Sortwell. He was educated in private schools and graduated with the Harvard University class of 1911. He entered the employ of the Ludlow Manufacturing Company, and had been stationed at Calcutta, India, as its jute buyer.
Sortwell died in Greece on Nov. 12, 1916, as a result of an accident while serving with the American Ambulance Service attached to the French Army. He was crossing an alley way, when he was struck by a British staff car. He never regained consciousness and died the next day. He is now buried in the Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA.
