Albert L. Johnson was born on November 25, 1921. On 15 September 1944, Private Albert L. Johnson was serving as a Medical Aidman with the 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, First U.S. Army. On that day, PVT Johnson’s unit was in action against German forces at Aachen, Germany. Seeing a wounded soldier, PVT Johnson braved intense artillery, mortar, machine gun and small arms fire and crawled to a position about 20 yards from an German pillbox and evacuated the man to safety. On two other occasions, PVT Johnson advanced through heavy shelling and direct machine gun fire to administer medical treatment to battle casualties and then returned across the fire-swept field to guide litter bearers forward. When a soldier suffering from a severe injury lay helpless and exposed to artillery fire, Pvt Johnson again moved through the heavy shelling to the wounded man and carried him to safety. PVT Johnson’s selfless, courageous actions and extraordinary heroism that day, at the eventual cost of his life, earned him the U.S. Army's second highest award for valor, the Distinguished Service Cross.
