William Zanone Baker was born on May 17, 1907 in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky. He was the son of Jesse Gerald Baker and Mary Stella Zanone Baker. William was a well known golfer in the Louisville, Kentucky area. He was the assistant pro at Standard Country Club for 15 years and manager at Owl Creek Country Club in Anchorage, KY before his enlistment. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Private First Class in the Company G, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on September 19, 1944 caused by multiple shrapnel wounds and is now buried in New Albany National Cemetery, New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana, USA.
