John Wilbert Cooper was born on August 27, 1920 in Lyndon, Caledonia County, Vermont. He was the son of Miles Wilbert Cooper and Kathleen C. Thompson Cooper. He enlisted in the Vermont National Guard on February 24, 1941, prior to the war, in Lyndonville, Vermont. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Actor and also as Single, without dependents. He resided in Caledonia County, Vermont prior to the war. Lt. Cooper was a member of the mortar section, Company D, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He landed with his Company at approximately 1400 hrs. on the "Easy Red" sector of Omaha Beach. At approximately 1530 hrs, while moving with his Company up the slope beyond the beach, Lt Cooper stepped on a German land mine and sustained a fatal injury. He died on June 6, 1944 is now buried in Lyndon Center Cemetery, Lyndon, Caledonia County, Vermont, USA.
