Clarence Oscar Deakyne, Jr. was born on April 20, 1917 in New Castle County, Delaware. He was the on of Clarence Oscar Deakyne, Sr. and Rose May Hickman Deakyne who resided in Minquadale, Delaware during the war. He enlisted in the Army on July 22, 1942 in Camden, New Jersey. He was noted as being employed as a Laboratory technician and/or assistant and also as Single, without dependents. He resided in Calvert County, Maryland prior to the war and previously to that he resided in Minquadale, DE with his parents. Clarence served as a Staff Sergeant with the 33rd Chemical Decontamination Company, U.S. Army during World War III. He was killed during the Exercise Tiger--one of the large-scale rehearsals for the D-Day invasion of Normandy. This took place in April 1944 in Slapton Sands, Devon in the UK. An Allied naval convoy involved in the exercise was attacked by German submarines, and coordination and communication problems resulted in friendly fire deaths. At least 749 American servicemen were killed. Because of the impending invasion of Normandy, the incident was highly classified and the full story did not come out until years later after the war. Clarence is now buried in Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom. He has 2 memorials located in Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle, New Castle County, Delaware and Barratts Chapel Cemetery, Frederica, Kent County, Delaware.
