Thomas Winfield Cole was born on October 13, 1895 in Conway, Carroll County, New Hampshire. He was the son of the late Frank Gardner Cole and Mrs Etta A. Tarr, formerly of Springvale, now residing in Maplewood,Mass. He came to Springvale shortly before he enlisted and was employed by Clarence Taylor of that town. He was 21 years old when he enlisted in Battery B, 1st Maine Heavy Artillery, National Guard on July 21,1917. He was transferred to the Trench Mortar Battery, Artillery Brigade, 26th Division, Aug. 22,1917. He was wounded in France on May 8, 1919 and died 2 days later. He is now burien in Center Conway Cemetery, Center Conway, Carroll County, New Hampshire, USA. The Sanford Post of the American Legion is named after him.
