Andrew F. Connell was born on December 9, 1893 in Rochester, Strafford County, New Hampshire. He first joined the NH National Guard and served at the Mexico border, where he was in 15 battles, being promoted to Sergeant. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I in the 101st Sanitary Trains, 26th Division. He died on September 26, 1918 and is now buried in St. Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt, France. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 101st Ambulance Company, 101st Sanitary Train, 26th Division, A.E.F., at Saulx, September 26, 1918, Sergeant Connell labored unceasingly throughout the engagement treating and evacuating the wounded soldiers in the advanced areas. He made repeated trips through an intense barrage and was again returning to duty at the front after a trip through exceptionally heavy fire when he was killed by an exploding shell.
