Edward E. Nickles was born on February 17, 1891 in Charlestown, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. He enlisted in the Army on June 25, 1915, in Co. A Signal Corps Mass. NG. He had served on the Mexican Border. He was transferred to Co B 1st Bn. Field Signal Corps, 26th Division and was promoted to Corporal on March 2, 1917. He was deployed overseas on September 23, 1917 and was promoted to Sergeant on October 9, 1918. He died of wounds received in action on October 25, 1918 and is now buried in Cambridge Cemetery, Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA. He was awarded the for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B. 101st Field Signal Battalion 26th Division near Verdun, France 25 October 1918. At a time when the telephone lines were badly needed, Sergeant Nickles remained without shelter for several hours testing out the lines until a shell burst in his vicinity wounding him. He died from the effects in a few hours.
