John McGarvey, Jr. was born in Salem, N. Y. on November 3, 1893, the son of John and Elizabeth MeGarvey. He was educated in the Stoughton public schools, was an attendant of the Universalist Church, a member of Stoughton Lodge I.O.O.F., and of Stoughton Grange, and was employed by the Geo. E. Belcher Last Co. He entered the service on April 10, 1917, enlisting in Co. C, 1st Mass. Engineers, which organization was mustered into the service of the United States, August 5, 1917, as Co. C, 101st Engineers. He sailed overseas September 26, 1917 and arrived in France October 19. He took part in the engagements in Toul Sector, Pas Fini Sector, Rupt Sector, St. Mihiel Offensive, Troyon, Sector and Meuse-Argonne Offensive, was wounded at Chateau Thierry, July 10, and was in the hospital with appendicitis. He died of lobar pneumonia in Camp Hospital No. 41 on December 30, 1918, and was temporarily buried in American Cemetery No. 58 at Is-Sur-Tille, France. he is now buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Stoughton, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, USA.
