William Patrick Stowell, Jr. was born on July 18, 1894 in Franklin, Allegany County, Maryland. He enlisted at Keyser, on July 13, 1917, and after training at Gettysburg, Pa., for five months sailed for overseas on December 18, 1918. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in the 103rd Machine Gun Battalion, 26th Infantry Division. He was slightly wounded in action on April 10, 1918, but returned to the firing line on May 30. He was Killed in Action on July 18, 1918 in France at the age of 24 and is now buried in Saint Peters Catholic Cemetery, Westernport, Allegany County, Maryland, USA. He saw active service in several of the great battles of the late war and received a citation from the Italian government for saving an Italian soldier from drowning.
