Winford Ploof was born in 1898 in Franklin, Franklin County, Vermont. He was the son of Edward and Elmira Ploof. Winford enlisted on June 19, 1916 in Co. B, 1st Vermont Infantry and performed duty with his regiment along the Mexican border. He entered federal service on March 27, 1917 as a Private First Class with Co. B of the 103d Machine Gun Battalion. He was sent overseas on October 3, 1917, was wounded in action by German shrapnel on April 16, 1918 in the Apremont sector and died of his wounds at the American evacuation hospital at Toul, France on April 18, 1918. He was the first soldier from St. Albans to die in World War I. He is now buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Saint Albans, Franklin County, Vermont, USA.
