"John Mortimer Fitzpatrick was born on May 23, 1898 in Somerville, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. John was the only child of Daniel and Elizabeth (Donovan) Fitzpatrick. He grew up in Somerville, graduating from Foster Grammar School. He enlisted to serve in World War I on August 7, 1917, and reported for duty the same day. He was assigned to Co. C. of the 102d Machine Gun Battalion, 26th Division, and was sent overseas in September of that year. John died of wounds received in action at Belleau Woods. His body was returned to Massachusetts for burial in 1921.
