Fred W. Hyland was born on March 1, 1887 in Scituate, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. He was the son of Lucy Ann Spooner Hyland and Francis Newcomb Hyland. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company C, 101st Machine Gun Battalion, 26th Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on October 23, 1918 at Verdun, France at the age of 31 and is now buried in Groveland Cemetery, Scituate, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, USA.
