Lawrence E. Redmond was born on October 18, 1894 in Massachusetts. Lawrence was the son of Thomas and Nora (Slattery) Redmond. A graduate of St. Joseph’s parochial school, he was employed as a bottler and later as an auto mechanic. In the early part of 1917 he enlisted in the Fifteenth Company, Coast Artillery and while in training at Camp Edwards, Boxford, MA joined Co. C of the 103rd Field Artillery as a Private.

His unit, then assigned to the 26th “Yankee” Division, sailed for France on the troop transport Suwanee from Newport News, VA on Nov. 16, 1917. Lawrence suffered a head wound from a piece of artillery shell during a heavy German bombardment at Soissons, France and died in a French hospital on March 21, 1918, the first American from Rhode Island to die in World War I. He is now buried in Mount Saint Mary's Cemetery, Pawtucket, Providence County, Rhode Island, USA.
