Alfred Dohna was born on July 5, 1896 in Madison, New Haven County, Connecticut. He was the son of Frederick Johann Dohna and Helene Martha Kropka Dohna. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in the 103rd Field Artillery Regiment, 26th Infantry Division. He died on September 23, 1918 and is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France.
