Lawrence Sanderson Ayer was born on September 2, 1893 in Putney, Windham County, Vermont. He was graduated from Dartmouth in 1916, was commission at Plattsburgh and went to France in August 1917. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Second Lieutenant in the 103rd Field Artillery Regiment, 26th Infantry Division.
