Comments:

Mahlon W. Dennett, son of Dr. Daniel C. and Lillian (Webb) Dennett, was born on June 10, 1894 at Bradford, Maine. He came to Winchester in his early life, where he attended the public schools. Later he attended Chauncey Hall School, Boston, and the Lowell Textile School, where he was a student at the time of enlistment. He was among the first to volunteer for service in the army, joining Battery B of the 2nd Massachusetts Regiment, later becoming a member of Battery F, 102nd Field Artillery of the 26th Division. His knowledge of chemistry helped him in his study of gas warfare, and he was appointed gas officer of his Battery, which position he held until he was wounded. Due to the effective manner in which he carried out this work, there was not one casualty in his Battery on account of gas. On the afternoon of July 24, 1918, while the Battery was entrenching about a mile from Chateau-Thierry, he was struck by a bursting shell and fatally wounded. He died in Evacuation Hospital No. 7 on August 10, 1918, and is buried in the American Cemetery, Belleau Woods, France.
