Clarence Joseph Hemphill was born on February 17, 1890 in Auburn, King County, Washington. He was the son of William Nelson Hemphill and Harriett Elizabeth Brannan Hemphill. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Second Lieutenant in the 101st Field Artillery Regiment, 26th Infantry Division. He died on February 22, 1919 and is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France.
