William L. Wurl was born on April 3, 1894 in Tomahawk, Lincoln County, Wisconsin. William was the son of August W. Wurl and Anna Johlke, both born Germany. William was a meat cutter and butcher before entering the service. He enlisted in the Army on May 4, 1917 at Fort Snelling. He trained at Fort Snelling and Camp Cody, New Mexico. He left Hoboken for England in June 1918. At Haumont, Verdun sector, while at an outpost doing guard duty he was killed by shrapnel from a bursting shell on October 16, 1918 at the age of 24. His current burial place is unknown but he has a cenotaph located in Victory Memorial Drive, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, USA.
