John J. Thoemmel entered the military service in California. He was called to Camp Lewis in November 1917 and transferred shortly after to Camp Mills. He arrived in France on December 29, 1918. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in the 104th Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He was Killed in Action on July 21, 1918 and is now buried in Aisne-Marne American Cem., Belleau, France.
