The Technical Sergeant was a Texas Native and and lumber checker for the Southern Pine Lumber Company prior to his service. On June 17, 1944 while Arnold was the aerial engineer and top turret gunner on a B-17 bomber that was hit by German FLAK, Arnold suffered a broken leg during a jump with his crew into the region of Loue, France. Arnold was later taken to the German military hospital at Rennes France. He was then moved to Stalag 221 in Saint Jacques-de-Lande near Rennes after his recovery.
