Chester Roe Howard was born on May 1, 1894 in Nebraska, son of Alice and Christopher Howard. He was a graduate of Cornell College and volunteered in May, 1917. he served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a First Lieutenant in the 104th Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He was wounded three times at battle of Chateau Thierry in France and finally was killed in action October 16, 1918 when ordered to take a position under heavy fire. He is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France. He also has a cenotaph located in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Mount Vernon, Linn County, Iowa, USA. He was cited for bravery by retaining command of his company and leading it through a violent artillery and machine-gun barrage until he fell exhausted after advancing 200 meters.
