When Harold Ludington Hemingway was born on May 25, 1893, in New Haven, Connecticut, his father, James, was 32 and his mother, Louise, was 25. He had one brother and one sister. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a First Lieutenant in the 104th Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on October 21, 1918 in Glorieux, France at the age of 25 and is now buried in Grove Street Cemetery, New Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut, USA. His rank in his gravestone is Captain.
