Paul Walter Hagel was born on January 16, 1891. He was the son of Carl O. Hagel and Bertha B. Bartz Hagel. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company D, 104th Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. He died on December 21, 1918 in France at the age of 27 and is now buried in Fair View Cemetery, Rushville, Sheridan County, Nebraska, USA.
