"When Francis Theodore Gunther was born on October 30, 1892, in Springfield, Massachusetts, his father, Franz, was 35 and his mother, Apolonia, was 20. Francis was a farmer and an avid horseman. He kept meticulous farm records as well as records of his family. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Sergeant in the 104th Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry ""Yankee"" Division. He was Killed in Action on April 12, 1918 in France at the age of 25. He was found surrounded by the bodies of enemy combatants. Commended for his valor by the French Commander his company was assisting, Francis was interned at the French Military/American Military Cemetery at Vignot, France on April 17, 1918. On June 17, 1921 the body of Francis Theodore Gunther was returned to his family. He is now buried in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Hampden, Hampden County, Massachusetts, USA.
