Jerald Beitel was born in Nebraska on March 12, 1925. He served in Merrill’s Marauders ((5307th Composite Unit- Provisional) and served in the China-Burma-India Theater.
Merrill’s Marauders (named after Frank Merrill) or Unit Galahad, officially named the 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional), was a United States Army long range penetration special operations jungle warfare unit, which fought in the Southeast Asian theater of World War II, or China-Burma-India Theater (CBI). The unit became famous for its deep-penetration missions behind Japanese lines, often engaging Japanese forces superior in number. About 3000 soldiers served in the unit.
He was killed in the Battle of Tengchong in China in 1944. He is remembered with a cenotaph in Tengchong, China.
