Roy Hemon Bates was born on June 28, 1893 in West Boylston, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He was the son of Butler A. and Ida M. (Smith) Bates. He enlisted and reported for duty on July 9, 1917 with the 104th Infantry Regiment. He was sent overseas October 5, 1917 but was Killed in Action on July 22, 1918 in Epieds, France at the age of 25. He is now buried in Hope Cemetery, Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, USA.
