Clarence W. Allen was born on September 13, 1894 in Montague, Franklin County, Massachusetts. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Corporal in Company L, 104th Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry "Yankee" Division. Clarence died in the battle of "Belleau Wood" in France on July 23, 1918. He was the first person to die in the war from Montague and a VFW post was named in his honor in Turner Falls. It appears his body was lost in France but his name was honored on the Allen Headstone in St. Mary's Cemetery in Montague, Massachusetts.
